So you just built a startup. Great. Now it’s time to get your startup name out there.

Although there are many ways to market your startup, I truly believe that social media is the best way to get your baby products or services in the world to put your company ahead of the game.

Here are 5 social media tips for startups

1 Create a Social Media Strategy Before Making Social Profile

So what do you do first? Do you jump on every social media channel and start posting? I don’t think that will bring your startup ahead of the game but actually will fail you.

Before you start opening social media channels, you need to come up with your business goals and objectives and how social media can help you achieve those.

You need to think about who will be your target audience and what kind of image you want to portray on social media. It will be a totally different approach to brand practically or a more easygoing presence. One thing you need to keep in your mind is that you don’t necessarily need to project a company culture. You can have playful tweet occasionally while keeping consistency across your feeds.

Some of the questions you may want to ask yourself are: “what is my tune and brand voice?” Is it serious or funny? Images or videos? Perhaps gifs? How frequent are we posting, what kind of content are we producing?

2 Pick the right network that work the best for your start up

Because we are startup just like you are, we know how busy we can get. Keeping a social media strategy on track can be time-consuming at first. Especially when you jump in to every channel such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Linkedin… You name it.

Many companies, not only startups, but also big players, have so many social media channels just for a sake of having an account. They don’t even leverage each account at their full potential. It is not like you need to pick every one of channels. What you want is just a right network where the right target audience is.

I even recommend you to start with only one social network if you really don’t have time to spare for social media or hire social media expert.

3 Social Listening – Leveraging Social Media as Your Customer Service

When launching a startup, having an open line of communication is crucial. Leveraging customer service on social media channel is one of the strongest marketing tools.

Unlike telephone or call center kind of services, it doesn’t cost a dime to set up social media profiles.

In order to put social listening a mandatory task in your daily social media tasks, you may want to use a social media management tool. One example is Buffer, the one and only social media management tool that I personally use and I highly recommend. Additionally, Hootsuite can set up search streams for your startup name and track all mentions in real time.

Tools like Mention also allows you to keep on track. I personally use Respond by Buffer. Respond is a great tool to track all mentions, searches, and direct messages on Twitter in one place.

4 Evaluate, Analyze and Analyze More

Although working in startup companies is awesome and all, you can get overwhelmed by their fast-paced growth. This is why 1) becomes very important. You need to know even vaguely about your social media strategy before setting up your accounts.

Once you have set up your accounts and created a social media routine for all your channels, you can maintain a steady and consistent online presence. There are many tools out there that evaluate your data with one click; you receive reports on your engagements and reach etc…

There is no such thing as correct things to do on social media strategy. Every startup has a different kind of audience, target, and behavior. Once you extract data, you need to analyze and analyze and analyze even more to fully understand how people react.

At first, you find that your customers or followers don’t engage as well on one of your social channels, check data and make sure whatever you do is based on these data and not your feeling.

5 Be experimental

Last but not least, one of the most important aspects of using social media is not to be afraid of being experimental. There are so many new social media platforms that pop out everyday or a new algorithm that may change how we tackle our social media strategies.

Now, you should be all set up and aware of strategies that hopefully work. I encourage everyone to think outside the box. After all, the essence of the startup spirit is to problem-solve in an innovative, productive way.

Maybe you’ll get more engagement if you reply to a tweet using GIFs or Emoji rather a simple text; you could Facebook live to engage with your customers in real time.

You can ever go wrong to be experimental. Everything you do on social media will only bring your startups value. Don’t be too experimental though. I think a perfect balance between keeping your traditional strategy and trying a new strategy should be 70:30.

One of the advantages we have as startups is that we are flexible and can execute new “STUFF” much faster than the Giants while they have many meetings to decide whether to experiment. That’s how we can get ahead of the game.
